If your computer is connected to a LAN ========================================== If your computer is connected to a company network, you must contact your LAN/Systems Administrator before making changes to your computer as you may affect the performance of your computer or other machines attached to the network. There are also network security considerations to be taken into account before making dial-up connections to the Internet. 2). If you have had problems Registering (with LineOne) using Windows 3.x ========================================================================= Some users have had problems registering with lineone using Windows 3.x this is because the computer has not restarted properly after installing the LineOne client software. Symptoms are that the computer or the LineOne application may freeze during registration. To solve this simply; 1. Close down all open applications and shut down windows if possible, otherwise goto next step. 2. Turn off your computer, wait 5 seconds then turn it on again. 3. Load up Windows. 4. Double click on Internet Explorer Icon in the Microsoft Internet Explorer program group. 5. Continue with installation as before. 3). BT Internet, PIPEX Dial and Direct Connection Users ======================================================= BT Internet, PIPEX Dial and Direct Connection users should have no conflicts with LineOne on Windows 95 but both of them use software and settings that will cause a conflict with LineOne on Windows 3.1x installations. Please call LineOne Customer Support on (0345) 777464 for more information. 4). What is all this WINSOCK stuff? =================================== For an application program to connect to a network, whether it is a local, hard-wired network connected via an Ethernet adapter card or a dial-up network connected via a modem, it needs a Windows Sockets (WINSOCK) interface. In windows 3.1x this is provided by a file named WINSOCK.DLL which must be in either: a. the Windows installation directory (normally c:\windows) b. the network application's startup directory c. a directory specified in the PATH environment variable Only one WINSOCK.DLL can be loaded at a time so you cannot connect to a local network and to a dial-up network at the same time unless you have a special WINSOCK.DLL that can do both at the same time such as the one provided with Sun Microsystems commercial networking software package, PC-NFS Pro. If you have more than one online service that you wish to connect to, each will probably have it's own WINSOCK.DLL file. To make one of these your default service, copy the WINSOCK.DLL file from the application's installation directory to your WINDOWS directory. To make a network application use your other online service, either start the application in the same directory as the second online service's WINSOCK.DLL or copy that WINSOCK.DLL to the application's startup directory. 5). Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking Manual Configuration ====================================================== If you already have Microsoft Internet Explorer installed and do not wish to re-install it or if you already have another 32-bit browser such as Netscape Navigator that you wish to use with LineOne, you can manually configure dial-up networking and register on-line by following this procedure. If the Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking option is not already installed, you must install it from your Windows 95 CD-ROM or diskettes. Once you have verified that Dial-Up Networking is installed follow these steps: 1 Open "Dial-Up Networking" from the Accessories Program group in the Start menu. 2 Double-click on the "Make New Connection" icon or select "Make New Connection" from the Connections menu. 3 Type LineOne as the name for the computer you are dialing and select a modem to use. Click Next 4 Enter the Area code, telephone number and Country code. If you are in London or calls to London telephone numbers are charged at the local rate from your area, enter the area code 0171 and telephone number 715 5820, otherwise enter the area code 0345 and telephone number 002299 for local rate telephone call charges to LineOne. Select the Country code United Kingdom (44) assuming you are calling from within the UK. Click OK to save these settings and go back to the Dial-Up Networking folder. 9 Double-click the new configuration and type in the User name register@lineone.net and Password newuser in the "Connect To" dialog window. Click Connect and your computer should use your modem to establish a connection to LineOne. 10 Once the connection is made, run your web browser, enter the URL http://reg.lineone.net and select Dial-In or content only registration on the page that appears. You will then be guided through the registration process. 11 You now need to enter your chosen User name and Password into the LineOne Dial-Up Networking configuration. Open "Dial-Up Networking" from the Accessories Program group in the Start menu and double-click on the LineOne icon. Replace register@lineone.net with your new User name (i.e. john@lineone.net) and enter your new password. You can now connect to LineOne and start accessing our service and the Internet. The URL for the LineOne login page is http://www.lineone.net which you might like to configure as your browser's home page. 12 If you would like an icon on the desktop for connecting to LineOne, drag the LineOne Dial-Up Networking connection icon to the Desktop. This will create a shortcut that you can use to connect to LineOne. If you want your computer to automatically dial LineOne when you launch your browser or network application, open the "Internet" Windows 95 control panel, select the Connection tab and check the "Connect to the Internet as needed" box.
